Frequently Asked Questions
What is a deposit slip?
A deposit slip is a small form you fill out when depositing money into a bank account. It tells the bank who you are, which account to put the money in, and how much you're depositing. Most banks require one when you deposit checks or cash in person or by mail.
How do I fill out a deposit slip?
You need four things: your name (or business name), your bank's routing number, your account number, and the amounts you're depositing. Our tool handles the formatting for you — just find your bank, enter your account info and check amounts, and print. The deposit slip comes out ready to go. For a detailed walkthrough, visit any bank's deposit slip page.
What is a routing number?
A routing number is a nine-digit code that identifies your bank. Think of it like a zip code for banks — every bank (and sometimes every branch) has one. You can find yours on a check, on your bank's website, or by searching for your bank here on CheckDeposit.io. We have routing numbers for thousands of US banks and credit unions.
Is CheckDeposit.io really free?
Yes. Completely free. No credit card required, no trial period, no "premium" tier. We're a small team at Shoeboxed and we built this because we think small businesses deserve great tools without always having to pay for them.
Can I mail a check deposit to my bank?
Yes, most banks accept deposits by mail. Print your deposit slip, endorse the back of each check with "For Deposit Only" and your account number, and mail everything to your bank's deposit processing address. We even print a mailing envelope with your bank's address on it. Most banks process mailed deposits within 3-5 business days.
Do I need to create an account?
No. You can create and print a deposit slip without signing up at all. If you create a free account, we'll save your deposit history so you can reprint or reuse past slips. But it's entirely optional.
Where do I find my routing number?
Your routing number is the first set of 9 digits at the bottom left of your checks, before your account number. You can also find it in your online banking portal, on your bank statement, or by calling your bank directly. On CheckDeposit.io, we pre-fill the routing number when you select your bank.
Where do I find my account number?
Your account number is the second set of numbers at the bottom of your checks, right after the routing number. You can also find it on your bank statement or in your online banking portal. It's different from your debit card number.
How do I endorse a check for deposit?
Flip the check over and sign your name in the endorsement area (the gray lines on the back). Below your signature, write "For Deposit Only" and your account number. This is called a restrictive endorsement — it means even if the check is lost, nobody else can cash it.
What is CheckDeposit.io's relationship with Shoeboxed?
CheckDeposit.io is built and maintained by the team at Shoeboxed, a service that helps small businesses turn receipts into tax deductions. We built CheckDeposit.io as a free tool because small businesses that deal with paper checks often deal with paper receipts too. The deposit slip tool is free regardless of whether you use Shoeboxed.
